The fishing industry in Somaliland, while rich with opportunity, continues to face several significant challenges. These include limited access to modern fishing vessels, a lack of advanced processing technology, inadequate cold chain infrastructure, and a general shortage of skilled labor in the fisheries sector. These obstacles have historically slowed down growth and hindered access to international markets.
Hormuud Fishing Company has taken a proactive approach to address these issues head-on. With over $300,000 USD invested in infrastructure and operations, the company has built one of the most robust setups in the region. Our assets include a major fish production and storage center in Berbera, 11 motor boats, an ice production facility with a daily capacity of 10,000 kg, and a network of cold storage units and sales outlets in Hargeisa, Borama, and Berbera.
Moreover, we have created employment for over 83 fishermen, contributing directly to the local economy and livelihoods. By focusing on sustainable expansion and local empowerment, Hormuud has demonstrated that it is possible to overcome industry hurdles through strategic investment and strong community partnerships.
